Radio over IP with Embedded SIP and RTP
Radio over IP (RoIP) systems extend radio audio and control workflows across IP networks. Depending on the application, a gateway may terminate a physical radio/audio interface, establish a session to another endpoint or dispatch system, and transport voice using RTP while keeping radio-specific behavior under application control.
For specialized embedded gateways, the signaling component is only one part of the product. Hardware control, push-to-talk behavior, audio processing, network resilience and integration with the target radio environment remain application-specific.
Where SIP fits
SIP provides a standardized mechanism for session establishment, addressing and negotiation, while SDP describes media parameters and RTP/RTCP carry the real-time media and associated control information.
A purpose-built RoIP gateway can therefore keep radio-specific logic in the application while using a reusable SIP component for IP-session interoperability.
Why a compact embedded stack can help
A radio gateway may be built on a constrained CPU, an RTOS, an embedded Linux module or custom hardware where a full desktop communications framework is undesirable. SK400VOP was designed around callback interfaces for signaling, networking and media so the product controls the hardware-specific pieces.
That model can be useful for:
- radio-to-SIP gateways
- dispatch or control-room endpoints
- paging and announcement systems
- compact remote-site voice gateways
- specialized communications terminals
ED-137 and aviation voice systems
EUROCAE's ED-137 family defines interoperability standards for VoIP components used in Air Traffic Management. SK400VOP includes historical implementation work targeting ED-137B. That revision has been superseded by ED-137C publications, so any current ATM/aviation project should begin by identifying the exact ED-137 volume, revision, feature set and validation requirements.
ZMATRIX does not describe historical ED-137B implementation as certification against current ED-137C requirements. Contact us if you need to evaluate the stack as a starting point for a specific ED-137-related integration.
Build versus buy
An off-the-shelf RoIP gateway is usually the right choice when its radio interface, control model and deployment assumptions already match the requirement. Custom development becomes more attractive when the product needs unusual hardware, a constrained footprint, proprietary control logic, tight integration with an existing system or a reusable software component that will ship inside another product.
For those cases, contact sales@zmatrix.pk to discuss the target architecture.
